KABUL - An Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents in Uruzgan Saturday, including the Taliban regional commander responsible for western Kandahar province.
The commander supported area sub-commanders and helped supply Taliban safe havens outside Kandahar City.
Afghan and coalition forces have severely disrupted the Kandahar-based insurgent leadership over the last month, capturing 18 Taliban leaders in the last 30 days. Additionally, coalition forces killed Aqua, an Arghandab-based commander and Zulmai, a Taliban commander in Zharay District, with precision air strikes in August.
The security force searched a compound northeast of the village of Seyyedan in Tarin Kot District to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area.
After initial questioning of the residents on scene, the security force identified and detained the commander and two of his associates.
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
